The night which he was betrayed by one of his disciples Judas Iscariot, Jesus told rest of his disciples that “ …He is the truth…”. John 14:6.
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness of men who hold down the truth in unrighteousness.
Because that which be known of God is manifest in them; for God manifested it unto them.
For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse:
Because that knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.
And changed the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things”. Romans 1:18-23
The Greek word for truth is “Aletheia” means “The unveiled reality lying at the basis of and agreeing with an appearance; the manifested. Or the veritable essence of matter. The reality pertaining to appearance”. The invisible things pertaining to God is clearly seen in the creation, and being perceived through the things are formed by God. In the creation God shows His everlasting power, not only His power to create and but also to sustain the things which he created. In the creation it is also manifested his divinity that is His personality which shows how He functions in relation to things he created. His divinity is shown in the creation that He had lofty plan for man and all of them are good.
But man holds down the Truth in unrighteousness, that is what is not confirmable to right or what ought not to be, that which is wrong. Man did not recognise God by seeing the things which were created by Him. “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handy work. Day unto day uttereth speech And night unto night sheweth knowledge” Psalm 19:1-2. Sun in the day and Moon and Stars in the nighttime declare the glory of God.
Man, not only did not recognise God, by seeing creation, he changed the glory of God for an image of corruptible man and later on further fallen down to even to a state of worshipping creeping things. Either man, beasts, birds, or creeping things which are created by God, have incorruptible bodies. The Truth is, God is incorruptible, and He is the creator of all things. He has power to maintain his creation. Anything other than this is a lie and man believed lie and thought not of truth and turned not to God.
Lord Jesus Christ manifested God’s divinity (Col 2:9) that is God’s nature and power while He lived on earth. Before Jesus Christ appeared, men in general lost what it means the truth. Jesus Christ showed the nature and character of God in showing eternal love towards men. He has manifested the power of God by doing many miracles while he was on earth. He also shown that he has power over death. All other men are under the power of death, so they cannot be gods. Incorruptible things cannot be gods. God has life in himself all other things either material things, mankind, or angels, are created beings. They do not have power either to create and sustain or to overcome the power of death. Jesus Christ clearly manifested his nature and power through resurrection showing forth that He has that life which creates and sustains. So, Jesus Christ could say that He is the truth.
“Pilate therefore … To this end have been born, and to this end am I come into the world that I should bear witness unto the truth. Everyone that is of truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, what is truth?’ (John 18:37-38).
Man, may from time to time question himself or others what is truth? like Pilate who asked Jesus. But Pilate did not wait for the answer from the Lord.
Jesus said, He bears witness unto the truth. Jesus Christ as son of God, He is the truth and as a son of man, he bears witness unto the truth.
Jesus was tempted by devil while he was on earth ”… Devil showed Jesus, all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And he said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence Satan: for it is written Thou shall worship the Lord thy God and him only shalt thou serve”( Matthew 4:8-10).
There is a theory which prevails in the world called “Pantheism” which means “All is God”. They think that there is god in everything created by God. Therefore, you can worship the creation and it is equal to worshiping God. This theory eliminates the distinction between the Creator and creation. Creation does not have power to sustain by itself. Creator has the power to create and sustain.
There is another theory which also prevails called “Polytheism” which means there are many gods. Satan, before his fall he was in the presence of God. But he thought in his heart he wanted to be like God. Though he was fallen from the place and position in heavens since then, he promotes himself as god in this world by making people blind to the truth. He not only wants to be god, but also offered first woman and man that they will be like gods if they eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. They ate the fruit and fallen from the glory in which they were created. This is the origin of polytheism. Angel and Man both are created by God the creator. Either Angelic beings or man both are created by God and cannot be called gods.
“Thou shall have none other gods before me. Thou shall not make unto thee a graven image, nor the likeness of any form …. under the earth” (Exodus 20:3-4).
Then came Humanism where mighty men in the world believed themselves and controlled the things which still goes on in the world. It not only does not believe in God but opposes God and His power. People worshipped the mighty instead of God. There is another theory Fatalism instead of believing in God, they resign to everything in life, calling this is destiny of their life.
Our Lord Jesus when tempted by Satan, He did not worship Satan. Satan offered him all the kingdoms of the world. Kingdoms and all the things in the world are created and they will be gone if the creator does not hold them in their place. God is eternal and Jesus as a son of man He said we should worship only God and serve him. Thus, he bore witness to the unveiled reality and the veritable essence of matter. The reality is, God is eternal and no variation in Him. Creation or created beings are not eternal and it can change. Lord bore witness to this truth during his entire life inspite of many trials.
Anybody who worships the Mammon of this world, worships creation, or worships man is throttling down the truth. There is no truth in them nor testifying the truth. Jesus bore the witness to the truth contrary to what was going on in the world.
